Our policy can cover you for a range of canoeing and kayaking activities. Below we have described just a few ways you’ll be protected in detail but to see a full comparison of our policies check out our handy table.

Public liability

We cover £3 million of public liability on our all of our canoe policies. That way if you injure someone else, or damage their property, your insurance will cover costs for which you are liable. It’s worth checking to see if you already have this cover elsewhere. If you have a membership to the BCU you will already have public liability in place, even if you haven’t added insurance as an extra. Public liability refers only to third parties so remember yourself, your family and friends are not insured under this cover, you will need to look at adding personal accident cover too.

White water

If you brave paddling through white waters, you can add cover for this too. It will ensure that while navigating these tricky stretches damage caused by underwater objects, collisions and if you’re really unlucky, a total loss of your kayak, are insured This cover is only available if you choose to add it to your Gold policy so please let us know when you speak with us, or tick the box to add cover when you buy online. White water cover does not automatically give you racing cover and you must speak to us over the phone if you would like to race.

Accidental damage and underwater objects

Accidental damage is included on our Gold insurance and can cover damage caused by collision with rocks which lie sneakily close to the water’s surface and cause scrapes to the bottom of your canoe or kayak. Accidental damage ensures you have cover for repairs or full replacement of your canoe in this scenario and for a few other mishaps that might occur. We suggest being a little careful when you’re canoe is in transit as scrapes and bumps that occur during transfer will not be included.

Racing cover through the BCU

We are proud to work in association with the British Canoe Union to ensure that wherever you’re paddling in amongst Britain’s waterways, you’re still protected. That’s why if you purchase a BCU membership you can also choose to add insurance at the same time. There are varying levels of cover available to suit your style of paddling including options for different levels of racing. Alternatively, if you don’t need a BCU membership, you can add racing cover to policies administered by Towergate too. We underwrite and handle claims for both BCU policies and our own, so either way you’re in safe hands.

These are just some of the key features and exclusions, full details will be found in policy wordings. Show policy documents

It’s the moment of truth – you need to make a claim.

Whether you are insured with us through the BCU or through ourselves, you can get your claim started right away.

If you have purchased our insurance through the BCU you can fill in a claims form.

Photographs of any damage will help your claim along as the team can better assess what kind of repairs need to be made.

You charged me twice for my insurance which left me financially disadvantaged for a while. I did get my money back eventually though.

On 27-Jul-2015 the supplier responded:
I was disappointed to read that you were charged twice for the renewal of your Marine Insurance policy. In reviewing your policy, I've noted that on this occasion an unexpected technical error occurred which resulted in your over payment. At Towergate insurance we are proud of the service we provide our customers and we were sorry to hear on this occasion that the service received was not of the high standard that you can expect from us. I would like to take the opportunity to apologise for the inconvenience this matter may have caused you. I note that the payment has been refunded to you however, if we can be of any further assistance please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Boat Insurance (Renewal)

I contacted towergate when I discovered my boat suffered a rupture to the hull after hitting an underwater log on the river Trent and started taking on water, so much so the water was over my floor panels inside of 2hrs. After ringing for assistance as I was in risk of my boat going under in the night I was repeatedly offers a survay to see what the problem was and would come out for £75 even though I have breakdown cover. I told them its an emergency but was told they would do nothing. I was left to spend the night bailing water untill I found somewhere to pull me out. Not only did towsure abandon me to sink into the river but simply used my dire predicament to try making money out of me. I could have lost my home if it was not for a local boat yard and a fellow boater. I nearrly lost everything.

FAQs

What security do I need to cover my trailer?

To make sure a trailer is secure whilst carrying your canoe we ask you to ensure that a wheel clamp or hitch lock is fitted to the trailer whilst it is unattended. Not only does it help to deter theft of your canoe and trailer, it also means your insurance will still be fully valid if the worst does happen.

Can I cover my kayak for use on white water?

If you are using your kayak on white water then all you need to do is let us know. Whether you are setting up your policy online or over the phone, you will be given the option to choose white water cover. Similarly, if you would like to add this on mid way through your policy you are more than welcome to do so by giving the team a call.

Which water grades would I be covered for?

Towergate policies cover grades 1-5 defined by the British Canoe Union. To learn more about water grades read our guide to water grades.

Can I pay in instalments?

If you would prefer to spread the cost of your policy you have the option of setting up a Direct Debit to pay your premium in equal monthly instalments through our preferred provider, Premium Credit Limited (PCL).

To find out more about PCL and direct debit payments, select Direct Debit.

To understand more about how PCL work together with Towergate, please read our Regulatory Information.
