Top safety tips: What to do in the case of a caravan fire
Due to the lightweight materials they're made from, caravans can
easily get caught up in accidental domestic fires. The gas
canisters in particular pose a strong fire hazard, and this also
makes them a popular target for arsonists and vandals.
News stories about caravans going up in flames are alarmingly
regular, and in this scenario the first thought has to be of the
safety of those involved. However, when it comes to the aftermath,
it's worth considering how you will go about explaining the
situation to your insurers?
At Towergate we understand that this can be a very stressful
experience for our customers, so it's best to know in advance what
you are expected to do.
Caravan
insurance expert Edward Cross says: "It's fairly rare that we
deal with cases of caravan's catching fire, but when we do it is
normally a complete write-off, as caravans are rather flammable
items."
"The first thing to do is to ring the fire brigade and ensure
that the emergency is brought under control. Once this is done,
then you should ring your insurers as soon as possible. It's always
helpful for people to take photographs and you may need to produce
documentation to prove ownership."
Towergate customers with contents cover will also need to put
together a list of the items inside the caravan that were consumed
by the flames.
Finally, it is best not to keep your caravan's documentation in
the caravan. Instead, keep it inside your house in a filing
cabinet. Having this to hand is extremely helpful as it can quickly
establish the true value of the caravan and significantly speed up
the process of your claim.
