Top tips for reducing the fire risks of winter caravanning
In the middle of British winter, when the weather is at its
coldest, many caravanners will surely be grateful of their heating
system.
However, this does bring with it an added fire risk, as the
heating system can often be the cause of a caravan blaze.
Especially on older caravans, it is important to check the
heater for any signs of damage and dust build-up, which can happen
over time.
Furthermore, gas pipes can suffer from wear and tear, leading to
an increased risk of a very dangerous gas leak.
Most touring caravans run many appliances off a supply of
propane or butane, both of which are highly inflammable.
Towergate insurance expert, Edward Cross, said: "We don't insist
on regular checks but we suggest it. We do get fire claims and gas
explosions do occur. This tends to come from faulty gas bottles and
connections. We would expect people to maintain their tourer and
have it regularly serviced.
"We are not prescriptive about it, but if people are not looking
after their tourers then it can get to the point where there is a
fire hazard. At the end of the day, you have an obligation to look
after your caravan."
Indeed, taking simple precautions such as these can make all the
difference between a cosy winter caravan getaway and a devastating
fire.
