Paying by direct debit is an affordable and convenient way to pay for your policy. Through our preferred provider, Premium Credit Limited (PCL)*, you have the option of setting up a Direct Debit to pay your premium in equal monthly instalments.

Military kit insurance exclusions

  • The first £50 of each and every claim, except for claims in respect of laptops, when the excess is the first £125 of each and every claim.

  • Service firearms and their ancillaries.

  • Loss or damage caused by wear, tear, depreciation, rot, fungus, beetle, moth, insects, vermin, domestic pets, infestation, damp, rust, mildew, atmospheric or climatic conditions, the effect of light or other gradually operating cause

  • Mechanical or electrical breakdown or misuse

  • Pedal cycles unless specified

  • Any living creature

  • Loss of mobile phone air time

  • Loss or damage to laptop/tablet computer unless specified

  • Certain losses or damage if any endorsement/clause is shown on your policy schedule

  • No cover is provided for boats, boards or water craft of any kind

  • No cover is provided for items used for business or professional purposes

  • No cover is provided for any motor cycle, or other mechanically or electrically propelled vehicle, aircraft or caravans

  • Restrictions apply for theft from an unattended vehicle

Military kit insurance FAQs

  • Is accidental damage included?

  • Yes, if items you own or are responsible for are accidentally lost or damaged they are covered.

  • Am I covered if I am posted out of the UK?

  • You are covered worldwide, except for home contents where cover is restricted to the address shown but if you move within the UK or abroad providing you let us know your new address in advance full transit cover will be given

  • If I have to claim what amount will normally be deducted from my claim (the excess)?

  • The standard excess is only £40. The laptop excess is £125.

  • Does the excess increase if the claim is as a result of transit damage or because items were stolen from my car?

  • No but if you leave items unattended in your car they must be locked out of sight in the boot or locked in a glove compartment. Leaving items on display or hidden under a coat on the back seat will only attract the attention of thieves.

  • I have a household insurance with another company. Can I just insure the items I am likely to take on an unaccompanied posting?

  • Our policy is designed specifically for the needs of members of HM Forces. We have over 60 years' experience in providing special answers to your special needs. If we just insured you when you were unable to find cover for a period when you were most at risk our other clients would be subsidising you. If we were to charge an inflated rate for this period then ultimately it would be better to insure all of your possessions permanently. We don't even need to know about an unaccompanied posting.

  • Should I show the total value of everything under the home contents section and then just the amount I am likely to take with me under the other sections? 

  • No, all you have to do is show the full value of the items you own under each section. There is no need to insure personal items like watches and jewellery twice. The total value of all of the sections you select should then represent the total value of all of your contents and possessions.

  • What happens if I want to claim?

  • Just contact us and in over 95% of the cases we will deal with your claim. Sometimes we feel that the appointment of a loss adjuster will help you to present your claim and speed its progress. Our claims staff understand the needs and the lifestyle of HM Forces thus avoiding the need for you to explain how your job can have an impact on claims reporting and responses to letters.

Military kit insurance claims promise

With over 60 years' experience in the military insurance market, and with a dedicated team of seven military claims professionals in our offices in Leicester, you can be sure that you have the benefit of talking to military insurance experts should the worst happen.

We are available from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, however if you have a more urgent claim, we have an out of hours emergency service available too.

Your military kit insurance claim

Simply call us using the phone number in your policy documents and you will be talked through the details of the claim. You will be advised you of the next steps and guided you through the process right through to settlement.

In line with our service pledge, we will act within 24 hours of being notified of your claim and within five days if you provide us with new information on an existing claim, to ensure that your claim is settled as quickly as possible.

Most importantly of all, when your claim is settled we will ensure speedy payment by BACS straight in to your bank account or to the supplier.

We wanted holiday home insurance and Towergate offered a policy that did not cover many contents if unoccupied for a period. Holiday home insurance should cover unoccupied periods. We were also overcharged as the policy amount, VAT and Towergate fee added up to less than the amount taken by Towergate. When we asked for the policy to be cancelled as it was not suitable for holiday home purposes Towergate did not do this and we had to call again to ask for cancellation. In the end we received a full refund but overall the experience was not good.
