Spain lowers motorway speed limit
The Spanish government has lowered the motorway speed
limit to save energy in response to the increase in oil prices
sparked by the unrest in Libya.
Under new rules, drivers in the country are not allowed to
exceed the speed limit of 110kph (68mph) on motorways. The maximum
limit was 120kph (75mph).
Motorists breaching the new law may face a fine of 100 euro
(£86). However, they will not be penalised with points on their
licences for violating it.
The slowdown comes as part of a number of new measures
introduced by the government in an attempt to help to cut fuel
bills. The nation relies on imports for 75% of its energy.
A team of workers spent the weekend covering the old 120kph
limit with stickers on thousands of road signs.
