New GDC requirement – are you covered?

Dental professionals are now required to have indemnity insurance in place in order to practice in the UK. From June 2016 the General Dental Council are making this a mandatory requirement. Read this update for more information.

Since November 2015, dental professionals are now legally required to have indemnity cover in place in order to practice, and will be asked to declare they have indemnity insurance in place when they join the GDC (General Dental Council) register or renew their registration.

The GDC require evidence that dental care professionals meet this requirement and the first wave of declarations will be mandatory from the end of June 2016.

All dental nurses are responsible for ensuring they have access to indemnity in their own right or that appropriate arrangements are in place through an employer. The GDC recognises the following:

  • Professional indemnity insurance held by the individual or their employer

  • Dental defence membership – either individual or through an employer’s membership

  • NHS indemnity

The GDC states that assumptions should not be made about whether or not individuals are covered by an employer’s arrangement.

All dental professionals will need to declare to the GDC that they have appropriate indemnity cover in place. Without it, they will not be able to renew their registration.
