Features of our dental indemnity insurance

What dental indemnity insurance covers

Dental indemnity insurance cover includes acts or omissions in the course of your professional duties. This can include injury, delays in referral, misdiagnosis, physical or mental harm to a patient. Cover is also provided for declared private work in addition to NHS work. It doesn’t cover against incidents that occurred before the life of your policy.

Industry-wide dental indemnity cover

Depending on your profession and circumstance your policy can arrange for advice, assistance and representation at proceedings including a disciplinary committee of a professional body e.g. GDC; health authority; health board or primary care trust; service complaint proceedings or NHS tribunal; inquest proceedings or fatal accident inquiry.

'Run off' dental indemnity insurance

Your dental indemnity insurance policy will have a retroactive date of inception and offers protection from the inception date going forward. If you have held a claims made policy previously, we approach insurers to also include this period of time in addition. 'Run off cover' is also required when you stop practicing, to ensure your historical liabilities remain protected in the event of a claim.

Legal expenses covered as part of your dental indemnity insurance

Our dental indemnity insurance policies automatically come with legal expenses cover that insures you against the costs of legal or professional representation incurred in scenarios such as fitness to practice defence (including pre-hearing representation); criminal defence; coroners' inquests; regulatory compliance; employee extra protection; and court attendance costs, as long as there are reasonable prospects of success. There is also access to free, 24-hour legal, tax and stress counselling telephone advice services.

Dental Indemnity Insurance Claims

Should you need to make a claim, there are no forms to fill in; instead you'll speak to a member of the team. You can get in touch with us even if a claim has not yet arisen: we encourage you to report any incident which could lead to a claim. Letting us know early on will not prejudice your claim but means we can get the process started for you or simply put your mind at ease.

Make sure you keep a record of all correspondence related to your claim and please do not admit liability or speak with the claimant as this could affect the outcome of your claim.

Do you offer dental indemnity insurance to all dental professionals?

Yes, our indemnity cover is available for dentists, dental hygienists, dental therapists, dental technicians, clinical dental technicians, orthodontic therapists/technicians and dental nurses/student dental nurses.

What is 'claims made'?

Put simply, claims made means your policy will respond to claims submitted whilst the policy is active. Your cover is issued with a retroactive date, which means the policy will provide protection for any treatment provided after this date. In most instances the retroactive date will be the date cover is first taken out with us. However, if you transfer your insurance to us from another provider and have previously been covered by a claims made policy, we can look to provide a retroactive date back to when you first took out this type of cover.

Can you cover me if I have had successful claims or disciplinary action brought against me in the past?

We have a range of insurers we use to source our products who will look at each professional on a case by case basis. They are open to reviewing those that have previous claims or disciplinary action. Terms and premiums can vary but we specialise in cases such as this and will work hard, on your behalf, to get you the best deal we can.

Why do I need dental indemnity insurance?

For most professionals it is a regulatory requirement to have some form of professional indemnity, for example: GPs, dentists. For others, such as dental nurses or technicians, it is something that is recommended to provide you with protection in the event of an allegation being made against you.
