Whether you’re a racer or a casual sculler, our policy covers you and your scull against a number of risks.

Personal Accident cover

We all know there’s a bit of an art to sculling. In the early days, staying upright is a bit of a challenge but even when you’ve got a few Ks under your belt, the odd crab can still put you over now and again. Our personal accident cover can help pay for medical expenses should you be involved in something a bit more serious. This is included on our platinum policy and can be added to our Silver and Gold policies for just £5 but please be aware if you’re over the age of 76, you will not be eligible for personal accident cover.

Accidental damage whilst in-transit

We realise you won’t always be sculling on ‘home waters’. That’s why our gold and platinum policies cover your rowing scull against damage while it’s in transit. We can cover you if your scull is securely fastened to a roof rack or a purpose built trailer. This cover also counts when going abroad in much of Europe (subject to certain exclusions) so you’re covered for those pre-Henley training camps too. Whilst in transit it’s worth being a little more careful with your scull as we can’t cover scratches, scrapes or dents.

Cover for your blades

Let’s face it, you aren’t going to get far without them so we offer cover to ensure that should your blades break or be damaged, you can get replacements and get back on the water as soon as possible. As always we ask you to take due care with your blades, for example make sure you don’t leave them unattended somewhere if they could be picked up by someone else. Cover for blades will be equivalent to the level of cover you have chosen so check which policy will be most suitable before you buy.

Weather events (silver cover and above)

Severe winds are the one and only time when jumping on an ergo is more appealing than getting out on the water. However, severe winds can still blow sculls off of outdoor racking and if you’re really unlucky, you could get struck by lightning. Fortunately you can be covered for both these events. Though we’re happy to cover such events please take reasonable precautions not to expose yourself to severe storms, if you know in advance the weather is going to be particularly tough do not go out on the water.

These are just some of the key features and exclusions, full details will be found in your policy wording. Show policy documents

Boat Insurance (New Policy Holder)

quick and efficient service

Boat Insurance (Renewal)

There was a problem with sorting out a lost payment which had been received by Towergate however their record on settling claims has been excellent.

Boat Insurance (New Policy Holder)

It is unbelievable that despite a letter from Towergate on 19 November 2014 providing details of a change in management of my policy and clearly stating that "there is no impact on your existing policy and nothing else will change" and further that "we will contact you in advance of your next renewal" i was not contacted at all in advance of my renewal in mid-May 2015.

Towergate let my policy laps with no further correspondence and when I chased them I was treated as a new customer, so clearly again not as the letter from Towergate stated "as a Towergate customer, your business is as important to us as it is to you"

How can Towergate get basic policy renewal and customer service so wrong?

i wonder how many other Towergate customers have been left uninsured?

The only glimmer of hope, when i did eventually get to speak to someone he was sensible, pragmatic and helpful.

I was very impressed with the speed Towergate was able to guide me to the correct form to fill in for our small boat insurance and the speed of acceptance and follow-up with the paperwork - quick and simple - thank you

Will I be covered for gauging of my hull?

If you’re in unfamiliar waters and you go into a shallow section, it’s possible you’ll damage your scull on an underwater object. In this instance you’ll be covered. If your scull gets damaged due to carelessness or recklessness though, unfortunately we can’t cover you.

How should I secure my scull on a trailer or roof rack in order for my cover to remain valid?

Firstly, the trailer should be purpose built. Most rowing clubs will own a purpose built trailer and we’d recommend getting your scull transported on this along with other boats travelling to regattas or training camps. You should secure your scull on the trailer with at least two boat ties/straps and ensure there’s padding under one end so that you can pull the tie tight without damaging the bow/stern deck of your scull. A handy tip is to tape a bottle (with air in it and the cap on) to one of the horizontal bars of the trailer. If you’re transporting your scull on the roof of your car, you should attach it with at least two boat ties as above. You should also attach a fluorescent flag (or similar) to the bow ball of your scull if it over hangs the rear of your vehicle.

Am I covered for head races AND regattas?

Yes. You have the option of extending your cover to include racing on our gold and platinum policies. That means you can race all year round on rivers and lakes so you have no excuse not to do scullers’ head in the freezing cold. You will also be covered if you’re lucky enough to race at Henley. Just be sure to check your line and look out for those pesky booms!

Does the policy include legal cover?

Yes. Our rowing scull insurance policy includes legal cover with a 24 hour helpline.

Am I covered if I take my boat outside the UK?

The policy does include cover for outside the UK but is limited to 30 days (please check your policy wording for which countries are included). If you think you will be taking out side of the UK for longer periods than this, speak to one of our advisers.

What steps do I take if my boat gets seriously damaged and I need to make a claim?

The excess of our rowing scull insurance starts at £50 but is flexible. Multiple rowing sculls may increase your excess so check with an advisor or on your documents to be sure.

Can I pay in instalments?

If you would prefer to spread the cost of your policy you have the option of setting up a Direct Debit to pay your premium in equal monthly instalments through our preferred provider, Premium Credit Limited (PCL). To find out more about PCL and direct debit payments, select Direct Debit. To understand more about how PCL work together with Towergate, please read our Regulatory Information.
