Before the flood - Protecting your business against flooding

Flooding can be disastrous for any business. In some cases this means stock is destroyed but in almost all cases your business is likely to lose money simply because you won't be able to operate until the water has gone and the damage has been repaired.

Before the Flood

The calamitous weather last winter raised everyone’s awareness of the havoc that can be caused by flooding. Time will tell whether those floods were a one-off or whether they’re to become more frequent. What’s certain is that every business, if it hasn’t done so already, needs to think carefully about its resilience to flood risk.

And it’s not just businesses based close to rivers, streams or the sea who need to carefully assess the risk. No doubt there were many instances last winter where businesses that thought they were immune found themselves affected by flood caused by surface water, rising water tables or sewerage systems backing up.

Warehouse operators obviously need to minimise the risk of damage to goods they are storing. From a potential flood perspective, common-sense precautions can be taken including making sure:

  • Drains, culverts and ditches are regularly cleaned and well maintained

  • Perimeter flood defences are in good order

  • Electrical sockets and machinery are positioned safely above the height of possible flood water

  • Stillage is of sufficient height to prevent flood damage

  • Disaster recovery contingency plans include the possibility of a flood risk

  • Insurance cover for flood-related property damage and business interruption is adequate

You may also want to include hire equipment in your contingency plan. Consider including hire items such as:

  • Temporary sand-fill flood walling systems capable of rapid deployment

  • Suitable pumping equipment

Given just how much flood claims can cost in property damage and business interruption and with winter arriving, now is the time for every business to take steps to assess their exposure and minimise the risks.
