All of our policies detailed below cover your touring caravan as well as any fittings added by the manufacturer. 

  • 'Select' policy - our highest level of cover

    Take out our Select policy and be safe in the knowledge that you're protected by our highest level of cover. Our select policy includes some of our best policy features such as; new for old cover for the life of your policy and £2 million public liability.

    Other key features of this policy include:

    • Worldwide cover and RAC recovery whilst abroad

    • Accidental damage and collision cover

    • Friends and family towing cover

    • Loss of use, up to 5% of sums insured

    • Legal protection up to £100,000

  • 'Choice' policy - based on the market value of your caravan

    Our choice policy is designed around the market value of your caravan enabling you to have a policy which suits your 'van and still gives you 365 days' European cover, RAC recovery (also valid in Europe) and friends and family towing cover. 

    Choice customers also benefit from:

    • Accidental damage cover

    • Loss of use, up to 3% of the sums insured

    • £2 million public liability

    • Legal protection up to £100,000

  • 'Green' policy - rewarding the environmentally conscious

    Without the beautiful environment we enjoy both here in the UK and abroad, caravanning just wouldn't be the same. To help do your bit to protect the environment, take out our Green policy. This policy offers paperless documentation but also offers great cover features such as new for old cover (while the caravan is under five years old).

    Additional features include:

    • Accidental damage cover

    • Options for 30 or 60 days' European cover

    • £2 million public liability

  • 'Lo-cost' policy - for caravans valued up to £5,000

    If your caravan is slightly older or you don't get out in it as much as you'd like, our Lo-cost option could be right for you. This policy is based on the market value of your caravan and covers caravans up to a value of £5,000 and includes just the features you need. Nothing more, nothing less.

    Lo-cost policy features include:

    • Third party, fire and theft

    • Cover for your usual caravan contents

    • 30 days' European cover

    • Loss of use up to £50 a day for 14 days

    • £2 million public liability

Exclusions

Touring caravan insurance exclusions

The following exclusions apply to 'Select', 'Choice' and 'Green' policies:

  • Unless a wheel clamp or other qualifying security device is in operation, theft is not covered

  • Wear, tear and depreciation are not covered

  • Loss or damage caused by vermin, domestic pets, or by water ingress through seams and seals will not be covered

  • While caravan is let for hire or reward or used in connection with any profession, business or employment loss, damage or liability will not be covered

  • If your caravan is not kept within the boundaries of your permanent home or other location (accepted by us), loss or damage to the caravan and contents whilst not in use is not able to be covered

  • Articles of a valuable nature cannot be covered for damage

  • An unlocked and unattended caravan cannot be covered for damage to contents by theft or attempted theft 

  • Tyres cannot be claimed for if damaged by punctures, cuts, bursts or braking

     

Our 'Lo-cost' policy has the following exclusions:

  • Damage caused by storms or floods, accidents, malicious acts or vandalism

  • If unprotected by a hitchlock and wheel clamp whilst unattended and detached from  or attached to the towing vehicle, the caravan will not be covered for theft

  • Theft of contents stored outside of an awning will not be covered

  • Money, firearms, wines, spirits and tobacco goods, caravan generators and valuables cannot be covered for theft under this policy

  • Whilst the caravan is not in use or kept within the boundaries of your permanent home or other location (accepted by us), Loss or damage to the caravan and contents will not be covered

  • Evidence of forcible or violent entry/exit will be required if theft is to be covered

  • Electronic or electrical equipment left in the caravan when it is not in use will not be covered against theft

Touring caravan insurance FAQs

  • My caravan is stored in France, is the claims process any different?

  • A claim abroad would be processed in much the same way as a claim in the UK. Just contact the claims team on 0044 1242 528844 or on 0044 115 9349818 and report the incident. The course of action would then be dependant upon the nature of the claim and the cover.

  • Where are caravans/motorhomes most at risk from theft or damage?

  • Based on the information we hold regarding causes of claims, we found:

    • 55% of claims were made as a result of accidental damage

    • 18% of claims were made as a result of storm

    • 13% of claims were made as a result of theft

    • 7% of claims were made as a result of malicious damage

    • 5% of claims were made as a result of fire/flood

    • 2% of claims were a result of other reasons

    We also found most incidents occur while the caravan is being towed.

  • Does my caravan insurance provide protection for contents and associated equipment such as awnings?

  • Your policy would generally be broken down into 2 sections...

    Caravan - This relates to the structure of the caravan to be insured and its fixtures and fittings. The value of which is usually judged either by the Glasses Guide Book or the price paid to a registered dealer (proof would be necessary). It does not include any extras you may have gained as part of the deal i.e. motor movers or awnings.

    Contents & associated equipment - This section relates to any contents and accessories that you have purchased (or had included in your purchase). Examples of which could include an awning, motor mover, security devices (i.e. Tracker), solar panels and gas & water bottles.

    This would also include your personal effects. These are items that you bring to your caravan and are not generally covered within touring insurance policies. This is because, in most instances, they will be covered by your home insurance (check with your home insurer).

  • My caravan was damaged in a collision with a car going in the opposite direction. Who is responsible?

  • As a rule caravan insurance policies do not provide cover for third party liabilities whilst being towed because in these situations the caravan is considered to be a trailer under the control of the vehicle driver and so is subject to the Road Traffic Act. Your car insurance policy automatically provides this as it is a legal requirement.

    Any damage to your caravan should be covered by your caravan insurer (as would be the case with Towergate Insurance) but you should check with your caravan insurer to be sure.

    The only way you can save claiming from both your car and caravan insurance is for you to demonstrate that the third party was liable. Then you and your insurers could recoup the relevant costs from the 3rd party insurer, saving you paying the excesses and losing your no claim bonus.

  • AL-KO Chassis Wheel Locks - are they worth the extra money?

  • The AL-KO Wheel Lock is an excellent way to secure your caravan. As a company we have received fewer reported thefts involving these as opposed to a standard wheel lock (ones which lock around the wheel instead of into the axle). As a result, we give a 25% discount on insurance policies for caravan owners who use these devices. Unfortunately not all caravans are compatible. Generally it is only since 2006 that models have had the receiver built in and an AL-KO chassis. You'll need to check with your caravan dealer to ensure compatibility.

  • I plan to store my caravan at home, would this be acceptable for insurance?

  • Storing your caravan on your driveway is acceptable as long as you've met the security requirements outlined in your policy booklet. Alternatively storing your caravan in a secure compound could be better for your caravan, especially over the winter months. In particular CASSOA registered sites are preferred as they meet specific requirements for security. They are graded Bronze, Silver and Gold dependent upon their security features and claims record. Towergate Insurance can offer up to 25% discount for secure storage (dependent on policy).

All claims are handled in-house from our offices in Cheltenham. Should the worst happen you will have the benefit of talking to our touring caravan claims experts.

In line with our service pledge, we will act within 24 hours of being notified of your claim and within five days if you provide us with new information on an existing claim.
