Jet Ski Insurance Guide

Small but mighty, jet skis can reach incredible speeds in open water thanks to their jet propelled engines. When you’re skimming across the water, hopping over waves and otherwise zooming around we can fully understand that insurance is the last thing on your mind.

Never the less insurance is important for jet skis, not just to cover damage to the jet ski itself but to things around you and injury to you, to people around you and if you’re towing toys. To help you get your head around what you might need our guide will talk you through the different factors to consider so you can get insured and out on the water.

Do I need a licence to jet ski in the UK?

You do not need a licence to jet ski in the UK. Likewise, there is no legal requirement to have jet ski insurance in place if you head out on the water in the UK.

Though not a requirement, there are many reasons why taking up insurance could benefit you.

What are the benefits of jet ski insurance?

We have broken down some of the main benefits of our PWC insurance to give you an idea of how the cover might help you out in a claim situation. So here’s what jet ski insurance is all about:

    • Public Liability Cover

      Cover here provides £3 million for damage or injury you may cause to third parties. (By third parties, we mean anyone who is not related to you or working for you.) An example would be if you were to lose control of your jet ski and collide with other boats, piers, docks, wharves, jetties or pontoons. The damage caused would be your responsibility and that’s where public liability insurance comes in, to cover the costs. If you just purchase public liability cover like on our bronze policy, you will not be covered for the cost of repair of the jet ski itself.
    • Legal Expenses Cover

      Legal expenses cover helps you to recover uninsured losses as well as providing compensation if a valid legal claim is raised against you. In terms of Jet Ski insurance, this could be a variety of scenarios that you maybe wouldn't expect but aren't altogether unlikely. The policy will also cover the cost of defending or raising a valid claim up to £100,000. A 24 hour legal helpline is also made available to you with specialist lawyers on hand to help you with legal matters related to your jet ski.

    • Cover whilst in transit

      We cover your jet ski in transit too! We suggest you are extra careful when transporting your jet ski from A-B. Their value can make them quite desirable to thieves and so there are extra precautions we ask you to take whilst transporting your jet ski. Please ensure that when left unattended that a hitch lock or a wheel clamp,clamp is fitted to the trailer to prevent theft.

    • 30 days European cover – If you fancy hitching up a trailer and taking your jet ski to sunny Europe then you’re in luck. Policy cover provides 30 days of cover at any one time for PWCs on European shores. Just make sure you check your policy wording for exclusions before you travel.

How to get the best value from your Jet Ski Insurance

RYA courses – If you have completed the PWC courses with the RYA, we’ll give you a discount on your insurance policy to reward your freshly gained expertise.

Excess – Though there is a standard excess of £300 applicable for the majority of claims on our jet ski policy, in most cases you are able to choose a lower or higher excess depending on your personal preference. A higher excess may decrease the overall premium and a lower excess may increase the premium but will of course mean less to pay out if you need to claim.

Exclusions explained

It’s very important to read your policy documents in detail to understand what’s covered and what's not. Listed below are a few key exclusions you definitely need to know about:

  • Personal accident cover won’t cover individuals over the age of 76 – If you’re over the age of 76 the personal accident aspect of our cover will not apply. All cover relating to the craft however, will still apply.

  • Wear and tear and mechanical failure are not covered – If your craft is under three years old, we can provide mechanical failure cover. Wear and tear however, is not covered at all.

  • Replacements beyond the sums insured on your policy – This policy works on a market value basis. Therefore it’s important to know the true replacement value of your yacht. You will be unable to claim for a replacement yacht above the value you give us. If you’re unsure of the value of your yacht, a marine surveyor will be able to make an assessment and give you an accurate value.

Jargon buster

Sometimes insurance can be a bit like a foreign language. Here’s our run down of a few words and phrases which may be a little confusing.

  • Indemnity - Putting you back in the same position they were in before the loss

  • Public liability - Your ‘responsibility’ for the well being of other members of the public and their property. In insurance, this refers to the cover given to compensate legal costs and compensation payments resulting from injuries or property damage to others, which was caused by you.

  • Excess - A payment you make towards a claim on your policy.

  • New for old policies - You will be covered for replacement as new. (If we cannot replace your yacht with the same model we will work with you to find the best equivalent).

  • Market Value - The cost of replacing your yacht at its present value - taking into consideration; year of manufacture, type, wear and tear.

  • Policy schedule - Your insurance document outlining the period during which your policy is valid
