Features of Horse Trailer Insurance

Standard cover

Trailer hire in the event of a claim

Picture this: You need to get to an equestrian event, but you’ve just submitted a claim for your trailer, and it can’t be fixed in time. With our horse trailer insurance, once your claim has been accepted and processed by the insurer, you can hire a temporary trailer, costing up to 10% of your trailer (sum insured). This means that you can still go to your event and not lose out on any prepaid entry fees.

Theft and attempted theft

Theft cover is included but security requirements, such as a wheel clamp, may be required, depending on the locations and value of your trailer. We also like to encourage safe storage - particularly if your trailer is worth more than £10,000. We can provide discounts on your horse trailer insurance if you store it on your driveway or in a garage. Other savings are available for different storage arrangements. Please note that theft cover does not include the contents of the trailer.

Horse trailer recovery options

Our aim is to get your trailer repaired and safely back on the road - but first, we have to get it to the repairers. Pick up or recovery of your trailer may be expensive, but with our horse trailer insurance policy, you may be able to claim that money back (subject to the insurer's terms and conditions). We'll also let you choose your repairer - so if you’ve got someone in mind, just let us know. Please note that this may be from a list of pre-approved repairers.

New for old horse trailer insurance

If your trailer is under two years old, you will receive payment for the price 'as new' if it is written off, as long as it insured for the full current market price. If it is older than two years, payment will be on a 'market value' basis.

Horse Trailer Insurance FAQs

Question

Why do I need liability insurance for my horse trailer?

Answer

Liability insurance is there in case you damage someone else’s property while the trailer is not attached to your vehicle. For example, you may accidentally open the jockey door onto someone’s car bonnet, or your horse trailer might roll away and injure someone. When your trailer is attached to your vehicle it is likely you will be covered by your car insurance. If in any doubt, please check with your motor insurer.

Question

Are there any discounts for storing my horse trailer at home?

Answer

If your horse trailer is worth over £10,000, we’ll give you a discount when you store it at home, i.e. on your driveway or in a garage. Savings can be made with other storage arrangements – please ask your adviser for more details.

Question

Can I lend my horse trailer to a friend?

Answer

As long as your friend has the correct licence to tow, you can lend it to them. However, you can’t hire it out to them for financial gain.

Question

Can I insure a horse trailer that I'm hiring or borrowing from a friend?

Answer

No. You must own the trailer, in order to insure it.

Question

What sort of security precautions should I take to protect my horse trailer?

Answer

Depending on the insurer, as well as the location and value of your horse trailer, a hitch lock, wheel clamp, or both, may be required.

Question

Can you insure any type of trailer?

Answer

We can insure many types of trailer. As long as it’s not homemade, there is a high chance that we can insure it. We offer cover for Ifor Williams trailers, Equi-trek and other factory-made trailers.

Question

Will my horse trailer insurance be invalidated if I keep my trailer in a field?

Answer

Depending on whether there is somebody living on site and the proximity of the trailer to the property, you may be able to store it on a field. However, we most certainly do not recommend it.

Question

Will there be an excess if I need to make a claim on my horse trailer insurance?

Answer

Yes. The standard excess is £50 for accidental damage and £100 for theft, malicious damage, storm damage, etc. However, these could change depending on your requirements. Your excesses will also be explained to you at the point of quotation, so if you have any questions, please do ask. Also ensure that you read your policy summary and schedule to make sure you understand how much you may have to pay, yourself.

Question

Can I use my horse trailer for commercial transportation?

Answer

Yes, you can use your horse trailer for commercial transportation under a horse trailer insurance policy. However, you are only covered when you are driving the trailer yourself and when it is used for its intended purpose.

Question

Can I pay for my horse trailer insurance policy in instalments?

Answer

If you would prefer to spread the cost of your policy, you have the option of setting up a Direct Debit to pay your premium in equal monthly instalments through our preferred provider, Premium Credit Limited (PCL).

To find out more about PCL and direct debit payments, select Direct Debit.

To understand more about how PCL work together with Towergate, please read our Regulatory Information.
