Features of Horsebox Breakdown Cover

Standard cover

Horsebox breakdown cover including roadside assistance

We provide fast arrivals of mechanical agents in response to your call. This means less time wasted before work begins to get you and your horse(s) back on the road, or to make other appropriate arrangements for you if your vehicle or trailer cannot be restarted or repaired.

Recovery of your vehicle or trailer and horses to any UK destination

If your horsebox has broken down and an agent has been sent out to you, but the vehicle cannot be started or repaired, you are likely to need to move to another location. Your horsebox breakdown insurance will cover the transport for you, your horse(s), and any passengers to an appropriate location such as your home, your original destination, or another location.

Horsebox breakdown cover including emergency travel and accommodation

If your horsebox has broken down over 50 miles from your home and it and cannot be repaired at the roadside by the mechanical agent, you may be in a position where you will need transport. You may find yourself in the position where you have to choose between either trying to arrange onward travel arrangements or find accommodation for the night. This could of course be a very difficult and expensive situation for you, your horse(s), and your passengers to be in if you did not have the right horsebox breakdown insurance.

Home service equine rescue insurance

If you and your horses are ready to begin a journey but your vehicle will not start, this can be a frustrating and stressful experience, particularly if you have a tight time schedule and many miles to travel. The Home Service option, available on your horsebox breakdown insurance, means that If you are unable to start your vehicle at the beginning of your journey, a mechanical agent will be sent out to you to get your vehicle started.

Horsebox Breakdown FAQs

Question

Why do I need specialist breakdown cover for my horsebox or horse trailer?

Answer

Unlike standard breakdown insurance policies, specialist equine rescue insurance covers the rescue of your horse(s) while in transit.

Question

What happens if I break down on the way to a show?

Answer

If your vehicle breaks down while it is more than 50 miles away from your home and cannot be repaired on the same day at the roadside, or at a garage, one night's hotel accommodation will be paid for you and up to five passengers. Horsebox breakdown insurance will also include stabling costs for your horse(s). Covers vehicle hire and public transport. However, please note that:

  • Before you arrange alternative travel, you must call the Rescue Control Centre for their agreement.
  • We will only refund amounts covered by this insurance if we receive valid invoices and receipts.
  • No compensation will be paid for meals or drinks.

We also offer a 24/7 Rescue Control Centre to provide you with emergency support, 365 days a year on: 01277720718 and 0800 243 783.

Question

What happens if my vehicle can't be repaired?

Answer

If your vehicle is irreparable, we will make arrangements to get you and your horses to wherever you need to be (within the UK).

Question

What are the exclusions of your horsebox and horse trailer breakdown rescue policy?

Answer
  • The cost of any parts, components or materials used in any repair is not covered
  • Ferry and/or toll fees are excluded
  • The horsebox must not knowingly be driven into unsafe or unroadworthy condition or until recommended repairs have been carried out
  • The vehicle must not be used for private hire, public hire (unless the appropriate premium has been paid), racing, rally, pace-making, or in any contest or speed trial or any rigorous reliability testing
  • EU cover is excluded

Please make sure you check your horsebox breakdown cover policy documents and speak to an adviser if you are unsure of any terms and conditions.

Question

What happens if my car breaks down while it's towing my trailer?

Answer

If your car breaks down, the horse trailer and horsebox breakdown cover policy will recover the trailer with your horses. It will also cover the towing vehicle that is stayed on the policy.

Question

I already have breakdown cover on my car, which includes towing caravans and trailers. Why do I need a horsebox breakdown insurance policy?

Answer

Many standard breakdown policies specifically exclude any equine or livestock. This means that if your trailer is carrying your horses at the time of the breakdown, your breakdown provider won't recover your trailer. We recommend that you check your cover with your car breakdown provider.

You can have another breakdown membership alongside this purely for your towing vehicle, but you cannot call out both at the same time. If you have your horsebox or horse trailer attached, you would need to contact us for assistance.

Question

Can I pay for my horsebox breakdown cover in instalments?

Answer

If you would prefer to spread the cost of your horsebox breakdown insurance policy, you have the option of setting up a Direct Debit to pay your premium in equal monthly instalments through our preferred provider, Premium Credit Limited (PCL).

To find out more about PCL and direct debit payments, select Direct Debit.

To understand more about how PCL work together with Towergate, please read our Regulatory Information.

Question

Answer
