Southampton Boat Show 2016 Highlights

The Southampton Boat Show has come to an end for another year but we spoke with attendees and staff to find out what their favourite things were at this year's event. Here are the highlights...

RNLI fund raising

Promoting their Kit the Crew campaign, the RNLI actually had two points of contact in order to raise money for this worthy cause. Their friendly staff were full of knowledge and walked us through why raising money this year has been so important to them.

We all know the RNLI do fantastic work but we didn't realise just how important their kit can be until we heard these statistics:

RNLI at Southampton Boat Show, Towergate Insurance
  • RNLI rescue crews are VOLUNTEERS

  • Lifeboat crews rescued 8,727 people last year

  • That same year they saved the lives of 368 people

  • A single helmet (part of essential kit) costs a whopping £280

If you get to speak with the RNLI you’ll be absorbed by their sheer passion and we guarantee you’ll learn something new. So make a beeline for their stand at the next event.

Ribeye at Southampton Boat Show, Towergate Insurance

Most unique stand – Ribeye

This year Ribeye created a unique space on their stand with something for everyone. There was entertainment for children and a bar for adults, with an expert team to help you with any technical questions. Also launched this year, their new model RIB the PRIME EIGHT21 was on display with a sleek new design.

What's the best day to go to Southampton Boat Show?

The second Saturday is usually the most eventful at Southampton Boat Show and therefore possibly the best day to go. This year we saw a world record broken! The largest ever ‘human image of a boat’ was created by members of the public and staff at the event to create a new chapter in boat show history. Watch the video from the organisers at SBS.

Also on Saturday this year, the red arrows took to the skies above the show in a spectacular display at 2pm. Who knows what next year's show will bring but chances are it will be even bigger in 2017.

As usual we were at the show but with a new and improved stand which definitely turned a few heads. We wanted to create a space where our customers could come and chat with the team in a comfortable setting and we were really happy with the result. With a fantastic spot which overlooked the water front, decking, seating and free drinks to help you take it all in. We were able to provide boat insurance quotes, renew policies and the team were on hand to answer your boating questions.

Also new this year, our daily give-away was based on the best time scored on our virtual reality speed boat game. We saw many test their skills including Sam (@racingcoleman), a professional powerboat racer, needless to say he won that day. That's not all you could win on our stand, we had many entries to our fantastic prize draw. The lucky winner will enjoy a free trip to Cowes Week including a boat trip there and spending money!

Safe Skipper Boating App

Safe Skipper launched their incredible new free app this year too. Available at the Towergate stand, the Safe Skipper team are a wealth of knowledge on all things boating. They were offering demonstrations of their comprehensive app to grow awareness in boating communities.

The app is resource for useful information for when you’re out on your boat or planning a trip. As well as useful and sometimes life-saving information, there are quizzes so you can test your knowledge before you sail. You can download your version from the Safe Skipper website.

Princess yachts at Southampton Boat Show, Towergate Insurance

Princess Yachts

This beautiful stand caught our eye and not just because of the stunning yacht which you truly couldn't have missed. The display from Princess yachts included 2,050 windmills to represent the 2,050 craftspeople who worked on the boat just down the road in Plymouth.

Also in Southampton- Zebras

Zebras Southampton, Towergate Insurance

Before you'd even reached the show, you’d have noticed Southampton has a scattered population of colourful zebras. Dotted around the city centre, you can in fact go on a safari Southampton style by downloading Marwell’s Zany Zebras app. The trail is designed to raise money for endangered Grevy’s zebras and soon the sculptures will be sold at auction to raise funds for the charity. The last weekend to see these Zany Zebras is the 14th-17th October when they will be displayed altogether before finally being sold. Just another great excuse to head to Southampton.

We were extremely impressed with the quality of the show this year, there certainly was something for everyone to enjoy. We hope to see you at next year's event.
