Features of our foster home insurance

More than a family member

Whilst some insurers consider foster placements family members, we know that this may be a restriction on your policy. We provide extra cover for theft or attempted theft, intentional damage and vandalism, caused by a foster child in your care; which would not be covered on a home insurance policy if caused by a family member. We provide cover regardless of a foster child’s background or whether they have a criminal record. Our foster home insurance also covers foster children in you care without needing to let us know when placements change.

Covering contents

Contents cover may be a standard feature on many home insurance policies but it may not cover your foster children's possessions. Our policy covers your foster children’s possessions along with items such as mobile phones and laptops under general contents. We include £5,000 personal items cover away from home for you as standard. Our cover can also extend to pedal cycles up to the limit within general contents, and higher-value cycles can be added as an additional extra along with more valuable items such as jewellery and watches.

Specialist foster home insurance advisers

Along with a specialist policy to meet your needs as a foster carer, we also have a team of experienced advisers on hand Monday to Friday who are trained to assist with any queries relating to your cover as a foster carer. We understand how busy foster carers can be, so you can contact us by phone, email, or post - whichever suits you best.

No need to tell us when you have new foster placements

With our policy, you don’t need to let us know when new foster children come into your care. As long as you do not exceed the maximum number of children permitted in your care, our policy lets you take on foster placements at any time without letting us know you have accepted them. If any of the foster children in your care intentionally damage your property, or commit theft or attempted theft, you can report a claim without the need of a crime reference number (T&Cs*).

Insurance is probably one of the last things you’ll consider in the grand scheme of things, but having the right cover in place could be very beneficial for you and for the children you care for.

How is your home insurance tailored specifically to the needs of families with foster children?

Having worked with a number of individual foster carers and associations, we have devised a foster insurance policy specifically for you, offering cover for the bespoke needs and requirements that you have. We understand the challenges faced by foster carers and provide a flexible solution for the protection you need.

How do I obtain a foster home insurance quote from you?

My current home insurance policy doesn't cover malicious damage by any foster children in my care, does yours?

Yes. Our foster carer insurance policy covers you against any malicious damage, vandalism, theft or attempted theft of any foster child in your care.

Do you treat foster children as part of the family?

As lovely as this sounds, we don’t treat foster children as family members - and here’s why: theft or attempted theft, intentional damage and vandalism by a family member would not be covered on a home policy, whereas we treat foster children separately, and provide this extra cover for foster children.

Do I need to tell you every time I take in a new placement?

No. We don't require you to tell us when you accept a new placement, regardless of the child's background or situation. Our cover extends to a maximum of four children in your care at one time.

How much should I insure my home for?

For your buildings, you need to take into consideration not only the cost of rebuilding the main property but also any outbuildings, swimming pools, boundary walls, etc. The value should include solicitors' and surveyors' fees and demolition costs. With your contents you need to consider all household goods and personal property and how much you would have to pay to replace them as new.

My current home insurance is due for renewal very soon, how quickly can you arrange cover?

We can usually provide immediate cover once you have received and agreed to your quote. We will always try to cater to your circumstances, so just let us know if this is the case.

What do I do if I need to cancel my cover?

You are entitled to a full refund of the premium paid if you find the policy unsuitable for your needs and cancel it within 14 days of receipt of your policy documents (as long as no claims have been made).

If you need to cancel cover after that time, cancellation charges will apply. Please call us or notify us in writing with the reason for cancellation and state the date from which you need the cover to cease. Remember, if your policy is in more than one name, all policyholders will need to sign the letter.

Can I pay for my foster home insurance in instalments?

Yes, you may pay over 10 months with our third-party provider, Premium Credit Ltd (PCL), subject to a 5% interest rate.

* Terms and conditions regarding needing a crime reference number
The standard course of action will be to not request a crime reference. However, we reserve the right to ask for the incident to be reported to the police where suspicious circumstances, fraudulent activity or the circumstances of the incident warrant a police notification.
