Caravanning for Young People

Cold, rainy and out in the middle of nowhere. That’s the perception a lot of people have when it comes to caravans – especially younger people.

In an age of cheap travel and popular options like Airbnb and Couchsurfing, caravans can be seen as being a relic of the past. However, caravans are still a great option for young people going on holiday or looking for somewhere to stay.

Google stats can confirm a spike in interest from younger people who are embracing caravan holidays and even buying caravans of their own. In fact, more than a quarter (28%) of visitors to caravan websites in the last 12 months were under 45. Not only that, but one in five visitors (20%) to websites that sell caravans and motorhomes were also under the age of 45.

Dealing with misconceptions

There are a number of misconceptions about caravans which are easily dispelled:

“Caravanning is for old people”

While the average age of caravan owners does lean towards older generations, caravan sales and use has risen across varying ages and demographics.

“I can’t afford it…”

You actually don’t need to buy a caravan to enjoy all the benefits of a caravan holiday. There are a number of sites which offer caravan hire at great rates so you can really have the best of both worlds when it comes to the caravan experience without caravan prices. Airbnb also lists caravans you can rent so you can enjoy the caravanning experience for less!

“I’ve heard the facilities aren’t amazing…”

While a caravan is admittedly different from your house, caravans enjoy many of the conveniences you’d be familiar with in your own home including heating, electricity and (depending on the caravan site) even WiFi! It does require some work but it’s definitely not a tin can experience in the least!

Top tips for young caravanners

Book early…

Caravans for hire fill up really quickly, particularly during peak seasons so get booked up early. Go as a group to keep costs down and perhaps negotiate to bring them down a little more. If you do decide to go as a group, bear in mind that large groups often make it difficult to find a site. It might be a good idea to split larger groups up to avoid that being a problem.

Plan early…

Once you’ve settled on a park, if you haven’t already got something planned, get familiar with the park and the surrounding area. Are there facilities on-site you can enjoy? Are there local attractions you can get involved in? What about hiking trails or beaches?

In the end, the whole point of any kind of holiday is to have fun – so enjoy it!
