Private medical insurance (PMI) is designed to cover the cost of private medical treatment for acute conditions that take place after your health insurance policy begins. It is designed to work alongside – not to replace – NHS services, and PMI customers retain the right to use the NHS. While some policies do cover treatment for certain long-term or chronic conditions, this is not usually the main purpose of PMI.
If you have an existing PMI policy and have made claims under it, we’d be happy to advise you on the best course of action on renewing your policy. Please contact us to discuss your specific circumstances.
The level of cover most suitable for you will depend on your reasons for taking out health insurance, but we’ll help you to decide which benefits are the most important for you. For example, you might consider the cost of the premium or whether or not you want to pay for part of your treatment or you would like a policy with extensive benefits for full peace of mind. Please contact one of our advisers to discuss the cover that is best suited to you.
Pre-existing medical conditions may be eligible for cover, depending on personal circumstances. Some insurers will keep your current personal exclusions (what is not included in your cover) which means any treatment for these conditions will be excluded from your new cover.
They will not add any new ones. However, some insurers might not cover illnesses or injuries you have had in the recent past or any condition that you suffer from now, even if these are covered by your current insurer. Before making a decision, contact one of our health insurance advisers who can help you to understand your options regarding pre-existing medical conditions.
Most of the health insurance policies we offer provide cover for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer but cover levels can vary between policies. Our advisers can give you more information about what’s included in the policy you’re interested in purchasing.
