Features of Gas Fitters Insurance

Standard cover

Public liability insurance for gas fitters

Public liability insurance is vital protection for your business covering claims from clients or members of the public should you accidentally cause personal injury or damage to their property. You select a public liability indemnity limit to suit your work up to £10 million, which can be increased at any time should your customers or contracts specify higher. If you have staff, Employers Liability meeting your legal responsibilities is easily arranged alongside Public Liability cover, under a gas fitting combined liability policy. Policies cover the consequences of defective workmanship but not damage to the item actually being worked upon.

Cover for your gas fitting equipment

Your tools are vital to your trade and not least for your customers safety. For your convenience we can add gas fitter’s tools insurance to your policy. Flexible limits are available for all types of equipment including testing, specialist and hired in equipment too. Tools must be locked securely outside business hours, and a single item limit may apply. Theft from vehicles overnight is not normally included.

Gas Fitters Insurance FAQs

Question

Can I work on site where I’m not the main contractor?

Answer

Yes, your policy gives you peace of mind as it will cover you as a bona fide sub-contractor, should you not be the lead contractor on site.

Question

Why do I need gas fitters-specific insurance?

Answer

Your customers will need confidence that should something accidentally go wrong causing damage to their property or causing personal injury to others on site, that you hold adequate public liability insurance. It is very common for main contractors to require proof of minimum Public Liability insurance limits of £5m to £10m in place before awarding a contract or giving you access to site.

Question

Why does a gas fitter need public liability insurance?

Answer

The consequences of a gas explosion are unthinkable and its essential that public liability insurance is arranged. Many customers will insist on cover with high limits and from a quality insurer.

With the potential risks varying according to the size, type, value and hazardous nature of the locations at which you work, or the use of processes involving the application of heat e.g. welding, soldering or blow lamps its imperative that you use an expert broker such as Towergate to guide you through the vast array of policies, terms and conditions that may apply.

Question

Will Risk Management techniques reduce my Gas Fitters Public liability insurance premium?

Answer

Insurance companies seek to insure well managed businesses demonstrating a good safety track record. By adopting risk management techniques which seek to prevent, mitigate and reduce risk makes your business a more attractive proposition to insurers. There is a wider insurance marketplace for well managed businesses which benefits in more competition for your Gas Fitter Public Liability insurance. The more insurers we can approach the better value insurance package we can arrange to meet your needs, being a combination of cover, price, terms underwritten by a quality insurer.

Unfortunately, accidents can still occur in the most well managed of business environments leaving you potentially exposed to high legal defence costs and severe financial hardship. Ultimately, there is no replacement for a gas fitters public and employers’ liability insurance policy giving you security and peace of mind.

Question

Are labour-only subcontractors covered in the same way that direct PAYE staff are under the employer’s liability policy?

Answer

Yes, we can cover labour only sub-contractors, as well as PAYE staff for the same risks under your EL (Employers’ Liability) cover. it is very important to declare how your workforce are employed as this will affect how your risks are calculated.

Question

Is the financial rating of an insurer an important factor?

Answer

It is an important factor and we only use insurers with A-ratings. Financial strength ratings in the insurance sector are provided by independent companies such as Standard & Poor's (S&P), AM Best & Fitch, Moody’s. For example, S&P ratings range from a 'AAA' to a 'D'. AAA is the highest possible rating.

Ratings provided by these firms are a globally recognised measure of an insurer’s financial situation and providing confidence on their ability to meet on-going policy obligations.

Your selection of a well rated insurer can be an important factor when you are tendering for contracts. Well run businesses need to protect their own reputation and will seek to only appoint contracts to contractors, whom share their values for quality and security. Consequently, they will only appoint main contractors holding insurance underwritten by Insurers meeting minimum financial strength ratings.

Main contractors in turn will require any of their own sub-contractors to meet  similar minimum insurance obligations, to ensure quality and consistent cover is in place for the protection of customers and the general public. We recommend that you carefully check all contracts you sign up to and ask if your client has any minimum insurance requirements.
