At Towergate Insurance, we specialise in providing tailored insurance solutions specifically for professional airline pilots. Our team of experts understand that your career depends on your health, which is why our Pilot Income Protection Insurance is specifically designed to help pilots maintain an income while out of work. This means that if you do suffer from illness or injury that leaves you out of action either temporarily or indefinitely.
If you are already part of an employee insurance scheme, we offer products that will ‘top up’ your existing cover, giving you additional peace of mind that you can maintain your lifestyle when out of work. For those who aren’t, you have the option to join our Pilots Income Protection Club, which gives you access to a range of solutions to ensure you’re sufficiently covered.
Our cover is split into three key areas:
Our Pilot Income Protection Insurance is designed to offer pilots a pre-agreed monthly benefit for a set period if you are unable to work due to accident or sickness. This ensures that you can continue to meet your financial commitments while you recover, for example mortgage payments, bills, household expenses and other essential costs.
Another key area is loss of licence insurance which supports pilots whose medical condition prevents them from maintaining their licence. If your licence is temporarily suspended due to ill health or injury, this helps cover your expenses until you’re fit to work once again.
In cases where your insurer determines that your licence will not be reinstated for five years, you will be eligible for a lump sum benefit.
Permanent inability to fly insurance provides a lump sum payout if you are diagnosed with certain named illnesses which will permanently prevent you from flying.
When you need to make a claim, we'll guide you through the process and get your claim settled as quickly as possible.

A Loss of Licence scheme pays a lump sum benefit if the Insurer is satisfied that your licence will not be reinstated with 5 years of the disability. Depending on the scheme it may also pay out a temporary monthly benefit if your licence is suspended due to ill health or accident. Normally, any temporary benefit paid will draw down on the lump sum amount payable.

If your illness is prolonged, you will be required to provide more detailed information. After a specified period normally, 90 days, you will then be asked to complete a more extensive questionnaire and insurers may request additional medical reports or information from attending physicians, your aviation medical examiner or other parties.
It is very important that you advise both Towergate and your HR Department of any potential claim in order to commence the start of the waiting period.
