What is Trailer Tent Insurance?

Trailer Tent Insurance is designed to protect you against the cost of repairing or replacing your trailer tent if it is stolen or damaged.

You are covered at all times including; when the trailer tent is being towed, when it is on site, when it is stored at home, in storage at an approved location, when touring around mainland Europe and even when your trailer tent is lent to friends (loaning your trailer tent will add £20 to your premium).

Third party liability should be covered by your car insurance when you’re towing your trailer and while Trailer Tent Insurance is not a legal requirement, it is strongly recommended. As well as covering the unexpected and unbudgeted costs of potential repair or replacement, your insurance will also cover your liability for injury to others or damage to third party property whilst on site.

What are the benefits of Trailer Tent Insurance?

As you take your trailer tent out on the road and into unfamiliar territory, having Trailer Tent Insurance goes some way to providing a financial safety net against the risk of damage or loss that might happen while you’re out and about.

Here’s a selection of just a few of the key aspects of insuring your trailer tent with Towergate:

  • New for old cover – Trailer tents under one year old can be replaced on a new for old basis if damaged beyond repair (policies are available which include new for old cover for trailer tents up to five years old)

  • 10% discount available for Conway Owner’s club membersCover when you lend to friends - for the small extra cost of £20 per year, you can lend your trailer tent to friends or relatives and still be covered

  • 90 days European cover as standard – Travel for up to 90 days over the course of the year. An extension on your policy to last for all 365 days of the year is available for an additional £25

Be thorough with your sums insured – If you take a lot of gear with you when you go away be sure to let us know about what you take with you so that it can be included in your sums insured. That way, as long as it’s stored in the trailer tent it’ll be covered against loss.

10% discount available for Conway Owner’s club members – Be sure to let us know if you’re a member to receive 10% off your premium (provided it’s above minimum premium of £99.50)

Exclusions explained

It’s always important to view the full list of exclusions in the policy documents when you take out your policy. You can also view the full policy documents on our Trailer Tent Insurance web page.

Here are the key things you need to know to stay covered and a few items which unfortunately we can’t cover all together:

When left unattended security devices must be fitted for cover to be validWhen left unattended security devices must be fitted for cover to be valid
  • Loss if your trailer tent is stored outside the boundaries of your home/land – If for example, you park your trailer tent on the road outside your house we would be unable to cover you if it gets damaged or stolen. This is because leaving your trailer tent on the roadside poses a much higher risk of damage.

  • TVs, pedal cycles and contact lenses – As these items are generally insured under your home insurance they’re not included in our trailer tent cover. Camping related equipment such as gas cookers and some furniture is covered as long as you include it in your sums insured

  • Theft when trailer tent is not equipped with a hitch lock or wheel clamp – In order to reduce the risk of theft we do require trailer tents to be fitted with a hitch lock or wheel clamp (both if over £10,000 in value) in storage and when you leave it on site

Jargon buster

Sometimes insurance can be a bit like a foreign language. Here’s our run down of a few words and phrases which may be a little confusing.

  • Indemnity - Putting you back in the same position they were in before the loss

  • Public liability - Your ‘responsibility’ for the wellbeing of other members of the public and their property. In insurance, this refers to the cover given to compensate legal costs and compensation payments resulting from injuries or property damage to others resulting from your negligence

  • Loss of use cover - Cover for alternative accommodation if something happens to the caravan that makes it uninhabitable, for example damage caused in a road traffic accident

  • Excess - A payment you make towards a claim on your policy

  • New for old policies - Your trailer tent and some contents will be covered for replacement as new. (If we cannot replace your trailer tent with the same model we will work with you to find the best equivalent)

  • Market Value - The cost of replacing your trailer tent at its present value - taking into consideration; year of manufacture, type, wear and tear

  • The home - Within the boundaries of your permanent residence

  • Policy schedule - Your insurance document outlining the period during which your policy is valid
