What does static caravan insurance cover?

Storm and flood cover as standard in your static caravan insurance

A concern for many leisure home owners, storm damage can cause a whole host of problems from leaking windows, to damage due to high winds. With Towergate your policy covers you for storm damage as standard, with exclusions only to damage caused to fences, gates and hedges, and frost damage. (Read our guide on winter preparations for a static caravan below.) If your leisure home is in a flood risk area you might find other insurance providers can't cover it or will exclude flood cover. We aim to find you cover including flood cover as standard. Note: in high risk flood areas, cover may be subject to additional terms such as having flotation devices.

Homecare emergency cover available as part of your static caravan insurance

You can choose to include homecare emergency as an additional product with your policy. It provides a 24-hour helpline and assistance, including emergency repair services for internal plumbing and drainage; external windows, doors and locks; damage caused due to lost, stolen or broken keys; heating repairs of your main heating source; and damage to a roof caused by adverse weather conditions or fallen trees.

Theft or attempted theft of your static caravan

We know that when your static caravan or leisure home is out of sight, it’s not out of mind. 31% of our customers surveyed said theft and criminal activity was a key concern when they are not there. That’s why we’ve included theft and attempted theft through violent or forcible entry as standard on our static caravan insurance and leisure home insurance, so you can rest assured that you are insured against damage or loss caused as a result.

Additional cover to suit you as part of your static caravan insurance

We’ve worked hard to make sure that our standard cover gives you a wide range of cover as a leisure home owner. But some things are down to personal choice, so in addition to the homecare emergency cover for your static caravan, additional covers you can choose include key protection, excess protection and legal protection. You can also choose to extend your home and contents cover to include hiring out for when your property is let or lent, which offers additional protection not included under your standard policy.

These are just some of the key features and exclusions, full details will be found in your policy wording. Show policy documents

Static Caravan Insurance FAQs

Am I still covered if my static caravan is unoccupied because of Covid?

Yes, our unoccupancy exclusions have not changed because of Covid, and you must still take the normal precautions and measures when leaving the home unoccupied. We consider your static caravan unoccupied if it has been insufficiently furnished for normal occupation or if it has been furnished for normal occupation but has not been occupied for more than 72 consecutive hours.

Out of season between 1 November and 31 March the home must be properly prepared for cover to apply. Please see our policy wording for a full list of exclusions.

What if something happens to my static caravan while I’m not there?

We ask that you let our claims team know as soon as you are made aware of the incident. If the person who discovers the problem can take pictures this will also help the claims process. Our dedicated team will then walk you through the necessary steps and they can advise on the best actions to be taken. Please keep in contact with your site and update any contact details you have with them to make sure they can get in touch with you should they need to.

Can my family stay in my leisure home if I can’t travel because of restrictions?

Yes, your family can still use your leisure home should local restrictions for both your leisure home and their own location allow them to. However, the same exclusions apply whilst allowing guests to stay, so please read the policy wording to make sure you are comfortable with them.

Will you cover any loss of earnings if I can’t rent out my leisure home due to Covid?

No, we don’t cover loss of rental income due to pandemics, including Covid.

Can you cover site fees because I haven’t been able to stay in my static caravan?

No, this is not covered by your insurance policy.

How much is static caravan insurance or leisure home insurance?

Your static caravan insurance or leisure home insurance policy will be individual to you and the premium will depend on a number of factors including, the level of cover you choose, the age and size of your property, the property and content values you need to insure and your claims history. It is therefore difficult to give an estimate on the cost of cover. Our average premium paid by Towergate customers in 2018 for static caravan insurance was £287.

What is new for old insurance?

Insuring a leisure home on a new for old basis ensures you will receive a brand new, equivalent model if an insured peril causes damage beyond repair. Towergate can insure static caravans up to 20 years old on a new for old basis.

How does leisure home insurance or static caravan insurance work?

Static caravan insurance or leisure home insurance can protect you in three main ways:

1. Public liability, often required by holiday parks
2. Damage caused by various risks such as storm, fire, malicious and accidental damage, depending on the level cover you choose
3. Additional and extended covers such as hiring out cover for when the property is let or lent, homecare emergency, key protection, excess protection and legal protection

Can I get leisure home or static caravan contents insurance?

Most companies will give you the option to insure your leisure home’s or static caravan's contents along with the property itself. Towergate allow you to specify the contents amount you want to insure. Make sure you consider what contents you have, to assess the value you will need insured. You may also choose to insure your contents on a new for old or a market value basis. If you choose new for old cover for the property’s contents you should consider how much it will cost to replace your items as new.

Do I need additional cover for my static caravan when lending it to friends and family?

You will need to get extended ‘Hiring Out’ cover if you are letting or lending your static caravan to anyone outside of your household. It’s simple to add this cover to your policy, speak to one of our advisors today.

What is the difference between my standard static caravan insurance policy and hiring out cover?

The extended hiring out cover, protects you in the event of loss or damage caused by malicious persons or vandals, theft or attempted theft and accidental damage whilst let or lent. Your standard policy will only provide cover for loss or damage when you are staying there.

When letting or lending the property you are required to carry out an inspection within 72 hours after your guests depart. The unoccupied element of your cover will remain unchanged therefore you will need to ask your guests or arrange to have the water, gas and electric turned off at the mains.

How long can my friends/family stay in my static caravan for?

With the extended hiring out cover, your guests can stay a maximum of four consecutive weeks, up to 20 weeks per year.

Do I need to let my park site know my friends/family will be staying?

Each site will have its own rules around guests staying, you may find there are additional restrictions following the pandemic to ensure park safety. You might wish to get in touch with the park anyway to arrange for them to hold the keys for your guests, and to carry out an inspection within 72 hours after your guests depart per the hiring out cover conditions.

Can I pay my static caravan insurance or leisure home insurance in monthly payments?

If you want to know more about our monthly payment option, please read our dedicated page on Direct Debit.
