About occupational therapy insurance

Money

Product liability occupational therapy insurance

If you use, recommend, or sell products as part of your occupational therapy, you need cover in case they cause bodily injury, death, illness or disease during the treatment. Product liability insurance for occupational therapists provides this cover. However, note it excludes products that have been changed, such as mixed, blended or tampered with.

Liability

Occupational therapy insurance with public liability cover

Public liability insurance for occupational therapists covers claims for bodily injury or property damage to third parties.  Depending on your needs, you can choose between £1 million, £2 million, or £5 million in coverage. Occupational therapy insurance does not cover intentional actions that cause harm to third parties.

People

Occupational therapy insurance including professional indemnity coverage

Professional indemnity insurance protects occupational therapists from claims of professional negligence and violations of professional codes of practice, as well as financial loss for advice given or services provided. In addition to any damages or fees your client may get, occupational therapy coverage covers defence-related costs and legal fees up to the limit of indemnity provided within the policy schedule. Intentional negligence is not covered.

Occupational therapy insurance FAQs

It is your responsibility to take out adequate cover although our advisors can go through your options over the phone and explain how you might want to calculate this cost. Alternatively, many industry organisations or professional bodies will likely be able to offer you some guidance.

Professionals who send out products, offer advice of some kind, or provide some services from their own homes can still cause harm for which they may be liable. For this reason, you mustn’t assume that you can’t do any damage when tucked away in your own home and speak with an advisor about your risks.

When you stop trading or retire, you can still have something called professional indemnity ‘run-off’ cover. This means that claims raised against you for an event which happened while you were still trading are covered (as a claim can be raised any time up to three years for personal injury and up to six years for claims such as property damage. When you are ready, we can arrange cover for you for this.

Many of our customers can get a discount on their insurance simply by being a member of a professional association or industry body. Speak to one of our advisors to find out how much you can save.

Yes, we cover a wide range of different therapies; just speak to a member of our team for details.

Yes, we can cover you whilst you’re in training just as we would if you’re qualified.

If you prefer to spread the cost of your annual premium, we offer a quick and easy direct debit scheme.

When you choose to pay premiums in instalments, you will be paying under a Premium Finance plan. We will give you full details of the finance provider, and the additional cost of finance, when we provide you with your payment plan quotation. This will include the total payable, the number of monthly instalments and the cost of each, as well as the representative APR.

If you would like to know more about our monthly payment option, please visit our dedicated Direct Debit page.

Yes, your professional liabilities for working from home are automatically covered in the policy. Just be aware you should notify your home insurer if you conduct part of your business from home as any property damage to your home will not be covered by this occupational therapy policy but rather your home insurance policy. If you are having trouble finding insurance for your home because of your work, please contact us to discuss your needs.

We do not need to see a copy of these. We will insure you on the utmost faith that you have experience and qualifications in the area you would like to be insured for. If a claim were made against you, we would then ask to see evidence of your qualification.

Yes, we do not specify how much experience you have or where you studied.

Yes, we can provide cover for you to work outside of the UK as long as you live and are based in the UK and do not have any assets in the country you would like to work in - for example, a house.

As an occupational  therapist, you may be able to work remotely and if you want to hop on a plane and work abroad, we can provide cover in respect of civil liabilities in connection with your business for up to 60 consecutive days. This cover can extend to a client’s property; a rented practice room; and even electronically, via the internet or the telephone. Cover is excluded for any action brought in any court of The United States or Canada.

Full terms, conditions, and exclusions can be found in the policy wording, a copy of which is available through the quotation process or upon request.

Please contact us to discuss should you require further information on this matter.
