Public liability

This covers you should you be sued by a member of the public if they were to be injured as a result of your negligence. We provide flexible public liability cover up to £10 million, so even if you’re tendering for large public contracts you can arrange cover to suit.

Products liability

This insurance covers you should any of your products cause harm to a member of the public. This extends both to products you make and manufacture, but also products you sell direct or wholesale. You tell us how much cover you need, with flexible limits up to £5 million.

Professional indemnity

Should the advice or guidance that you give to your clients be incorrect and leads to loss or injury to them. We offer cover up to £5 million and offer a 24 hour legal advice help line for all indemnity policy holders.

Libel and slander

To cover you should someone feel that you have written or said something inappropriate about them. In a case like this you can be liable for a claim to compensate earnings because of things like loss of reputation.

Towergate have consistently provided me with my professional indemnity insurance for over 12 years. The communications and contact has been positive, however I would appreciate their consideration of providing either some form of 'no claims' discounts or some form of rewards for staying with them. As you can appreciate - having been with them for this length of time, and not having any insurance claims made, it would be advantageous for towergate and their customers to look at how they might offer a USP and provide further compelling reasons to stay with them.

I had to call about my insurance, this was because you put the price up nearly £40 and I couldn't understand why. It was change when I called, I'm sorry to say I am busy and I would like the price I am going to pay on the renewal notice. Thank you

Hi. Firstly, we would like to apologise for the issue you experienced on this occasion, and thank you for taking the time to let us know about it. While we do everything in our power to ensure that renewals are invited correctly, sometimes issues do occur that result in there being a mistake with the premium pulled through, which is what happened in your case. We appreciate that when you are so busy, you don’t always have time to speak to us, so it is important that your documents are correct. Our rates are set by our insurers to reflect the risk they feel is covered, which not only includes public and products liability and professional indemnity, but also libel and slander and legal expenses too, which we feel are important elements of our cover. Is it essential that I take out professional liability insurance?

Whilst Professional Liability insurance is not a legal requirement, litigation against professionals has generally increased in recent years. It is important to remember that you don't necessarily need to have done anything wrong - all it takes is someone to allege that you have and you will have to defend yourself against the allegation, which could involve significant legal costs. Our policy would come into effect from the moment an allegation was made against you. Many professional associations now strongly recommend or even insist that you have insurance in place before you can take out membership.

Am I covered if I see clients at home?

Yes, the policy covers you to work at or from any location, provided that you live, and are based in the UK. This includes your home and the cover is not restricted in any way by working from home. You may find, however, that your home insurers restrict or invalidate your home insurance if you have business visitors to your home. If this is the case, Towergate has a special 'Homeworkers' insurance policy which will cover you to see clients at home or if you keep work items there.

What should I do if I think I might need to claim?

You should notify us immediately, even if you only think you might need to make a claim. We are here to help and quick action could mitigate costs or even prevent a claim. Equally, if you have a routine query on which you would like our opinion, we are always happy to help.

Do I receive a discount as a member of a professional association?

We provide discounts for many professional associations that we have relationships with. You can purchase most of our policies online and if you are a member of a professional association, select it from the drop-down box and your discount will automatically be included. If it does not appear, simply type it in. Even if you are not a member of any professional association, we can still offer you a quote.

What happens if I retire or cease trading?

You can lapse your policy from the next renewal date. We can also provide 'run-off' cover from the date the policy lapses. If you take out this cover, if any claims come in after you have retired, they will be covered if they arise from your business activity as stated on your certificate. If someone decided to sue you, they have up to 3 years in which to make a compensation claim from the date they discover their loss, so this cover would ensure that any late claims are still covered. You must contact us to arrange this cover, and a charge will apply.
