As a painter or decorator, protecting your business should always be a top priority. Whether it’s accidental damage to a customer’s property or injury to the customer themselves, having painters insurance is a must before starting out on any job.

At Towergate Insurance, we offer insurance policies that are tailored to suit the needs of your business, helping you protect yourself, your tools, your vehicles and your professional reputation. Get in touch to discuss the right cover for you, so you can focus on the job while we take care of the rest.

Painting and decorating often means working in other people’s homes or commercial spaces. A single accident, injury or theft could end up costing your business. That’s where insurance makes a difference. With a policy from Towergate, you can help protect your business from:

  • Excludes damage to property being worked upon.
  • Accidental injury — This includes harm to customers or the public due to your work, such as accidental trips, falls, or injuries from falling tools and materials., where you are at fault.
  • Employees — If you employ anyone, even part-time, employers’ liability insurance is a necessity to cover your responsibilities under compulsory insurance legislation for accidental death or bodily injury for which you are responsible.
  • Equipment and asset theft or damage — Tools and equipment can be insured and protected from thieves or vandals on-site and off. Restricted cover applies to losses from vehicles left loaded overnight.

At Towergate, we offer a flexible approach to insurance, allowing you to build a policy that fits the way you work. As a painter or decorator, you might be interested in crafting a policy that includes:

  • Public liability insurance — Essential before starting any job. It protects your business if a third party is accidentally injured or their property damaged due to your work.
  • Employers’ liability insurance — This is a legal requirement if you employ staff. It covers your legal liability for accidental injury or illness claims from your employees related to their work.
  • Professional Indemnity insurance— Useful if a customer claims your led to financial loss or damage.
  • Contract works insurance — This covers materials and incomplete projects against loss of damage caused by fire, theft, flood or accidental damage.

Pick and choose which additions work best for you and construct a policy with us that adapts to your day-to-day.

When you build your policy with Towergate, you can tailor your cover to suit your business. Depending on your needs, your insurance can include:

• Employer liability cover for staff and apprentices
• Legal defence costs for liability claims
• Protection for ongoing projects and building materials
• Theft, loss or accidental damage to your tools and equipment
• Third-party injury and property damage claims
• Commercial Vehicle insurance

Having the right cover in place means fewer worries about the unexpected and more time to focus on growing your business and craft.

Every insurance policy has its limits, and it’s just as important to understand what’s not covered as what is. Our painters and decorators insurance typically doesn't cover:

  • Acts of fraud — Any intentional damage or dishonest claims will not be covered.
  • Poor work — If a job you’ve done isn’t up to scratch, or needs to be redone, we won’t cover this under public liability. Public liability will cover the accidental consequences of poor workmanship but not the workmanship itself. However, professional indemnity insurance, which is different and additional to public liability cover, may help in such cases – it can potentially cover your legal defence expenses if a client brings a claim against you, and compensation if a client wins their case against you and is awarded the sum of money they lost as a result of your advice.
  • Wear and tear — If your tools or equipment have broken because of age or regular use, we won’t cover them.
  • This may also apply if you are working in a hazardous location or using processes involving the application of heat such as blow lamps. These practices need to be declared and will be subject to special terms when in use.

There’s no one-size-fits-all price when it comes to painters and decorators insurance. We base the price of your package on the size of your business; the type of painting and decorating services you offer; the level of cover you need; the type and size of properties you work at; if you are working at any hazardous locations or at height; if you use any processes involving the application of heat; and any optional extras you’d like to add. The final cost can also vary depending on your claims history and business experience.

To help you spread the cost of your premiums, we offer a quick and easy direct debit scheme for payment spread over ten months. Please visit our dedicated Direct Debit page to find out more.
